Troy loses to Savannah in Cypress Tournament Opener 5-3

In a tough game with Savannah, Troy again finds its defense shaky.

Troy would put the pressure on with its speedy, lead off hitter Alexis Bennett who worked a walk and stole second.  Morgan Conrad would follow with a sharp single to right center and Troy was up 1-0. Savannah came back with a run in the first with a walk and some bad defense.  The score was tied 1-1.

Marissa Soto would open the second with a smash to left center for a double.  AD Cornejo moved Soto over to third.  With two out, freshman Alyssa Felipe went to the short game with a good bunt to score Soto.  Troy had a 2-1 lead.  Bottom of the second and Savannah would take the lead.

In the third, with Savannah up 3-2, the Troy defense came up big to keep Savannah from breaking it open.  Runners on second and third, Savannah hitter hit a line drive.  Alyssa Felipe, charging the ball, made a great catch and fired to third basemen, Sam Mellano.  Mellano alertly fired to second base to catch the runner for a great double play to end the threat.

Troy would tie the game.  One out and Bennett would once again use her speed with an infield hit, stealing second and advancing to third. Taitano would then knock her in on a controversial play at first.  Game tied at 3.

Savannah would take the lead for good with some good hits in the inning and win the game 5-3.

Troy continues to show good offense.  Bennett, 2-3, with two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Morgan and Mellano both had hits along with Soto's double.
